2nd World Meeting on Medical Automation

November 1-3, 2006 in Loudoun County (VA, USA)

Overview

Despite harsh assessments and dire predictions about health care in America, evidence exists that in a near-term future this sector will be more efficient, more effective, more equitable, and less expensive. After all, history has brought us to an unprecedented intersection of bio-, info-, and nano-technologies in medicine than could influence all other aims and achievements. The 2nd World Meeting on Medical Automation hopes to provide that evidence.

At the 1st World Meeting on Medical Automation, last summer in Helsinki, Finland (see: http://medicalautomation.org/helsinki/overview.htm), presenters and attendees explored "Wireless Medicine" in which mobile phones and wireless networks could play a much larger role in reducing medical costs and errors while improving patient outcomes. "Caring Machines, Optimal Medicine" builds on the Helsinki meeting and extends to every setting of health care delivery:

  • Physicians' offices
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing homes
  • Assisted living facilities
  • Home care
  • Micro efficiencies that add up to macro economies of scale
  • Technological approaches to wellness and personalized medicine
  • National policy
  • Technological opportunities
  • Health service and technology business development

A special attraction of this meeting will be a visit to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Farm research center (see: http://www.hhmi.org/janelia/ ), which is scheduled to open on October 7.
